Glest is a freeware, opensource RTS (Real Time Strategy) where your goal is to build up an army and defeat your foe. Bundled with two default factions and a handful of maps, it was originally a square-off between the Magic and Tech factions, but later expanded to become modable, and boasts dozens of mods to date. The critical success of Glest is largly acknowledged to its modability, which allows the players to create their own maps, techs, tilesets, etc, even to the point of which it feels like a different game.

History
+
Released under GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE Version 2, June 1991
Glest was developed by the Glest Team, originally a college project, but it later became a full-scale open source engine which has expanded to over a million downloads on sourceforge alone! While its first release was a simple, but playable, game without modding capabilities, it later expanded, redoing many of the models for Magitech and releasing a fully modable Glest, as well as opening the G3D format, its modeling format, and the GBM format, its map format. Its final release was at 3.2.2, but it is still developed through two separate branches, the Glest Advanced Engine and MegaGlest.
